Relative Analgesia Ballarat

You may not know it as relative analgesia but you've possibly heard of laughing gas, happy gas, nitrous or nitrous oxide. One of the most commonly used techniquse in conscious sedation dentistry, it is simply a gas with no colour, no odour and no irritants that is breathed in by the patient. Basically, it induces a pleasurable feeling and kills pain. After 5 minutes of breathing in the gas patients feel a bit light-headed, often get the giggles and a euphoric feeling spreads throughout their body.

The benefits of relative analgesia in dentistry:

  • It works rapidly, reaching the brain within 20 seconds
  • It has relaxation and pain-killing properties
  • The depth of sedation can be altered from moment to moment
  • It can be switched off when no longer needed, other sedation techniques may have a lingering effect
  • It is eliminated from the body in 3 to 5 minutes with no 'hangover' effect meaning you can drive yourself home safely from the dentist
  • No injection is required

If you have any questions about relative analgesia or happy gas, please feel free to discuss this during your consultation with our Ballarat Dentist, Dr Don Anderson. You can also make an appointment for fissure treatments or white fillings Ballarat.
